Exact statistics about the importance of hair to male attractiveness may not be something that medical science tracks, but People Magazine has been naming the sexiest man alive every year since 1985.

Their conclusion: Hair is sexier than bare.

The evidence? In the 40 years of sexiest man magazine cover, only two bald men – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Sean Connery—have topped the list.

Do Men Care About Their Hair?

The question of bare versus hair shows up again and again in popular media. In the United Kingdom, an annual listing of the sexiest bald men in the world has listed Britain’s future king, Prince William, as one of the sexiest bald men out there for several years running.

The game show, Family Feud agrees, at least in part, with People. Their poll also named “The Rock” as tops when it comes to bald men. Show host Steve Harvey also made the top five as did actors Bruce Willis, Patrick Stewart, and Stanley Tucci.

But does the average man care about their hair?

The answer is overwhelmingly yes. According to this study, more than “70% of these men reported hair to be an important feature of image, and 62% agreed that hair loss could affect self-esteem. The realization that they were losing hair was linked to concern about losing an important part of personal attractiveness (43% of men), fear of becoming bald (42%), concern about getting older (37%), negative effects on social life (22%), and feelings of depression (21%).”

It would appear then that most men would agree that attractive bald men are the exception rather than the rule.

Are Men With a Full Head of Hair More Confident?

Psychoanalyst Tom Woolridge wrote that a man’s approach to his hair loss has a great deal to do with how confident he is as it happens. “I am reminded of another client, Bruce, who described feeling gripped by anxiety as he made his way across the college campus, painfully aware of his receding hair line. Frustrated with the feeling of smallness it evoked in him, he laid out his plans to shave his head during the upcoming weekend. ‘I’m going to confront this head on,’ he said with a wry smile. And, in fact, his experiment was beneficial for him. Over the coming weeks, he reflected on how he had taken an active role in what was befalling him, instead of waiting for it to happen.”

In short, he argued that the hair loss is “deeply poignant and evocative experience for the young men who struggle with it.” Woolridge made the psychology of hair loss the topic of one of his academic papers, arguing here that it is an understudied aspect of men’s mental health.

While men like Johnson, Willis and Stewart are clearly confident in their baldness, many younger men struggle with hair loss often equate male pattern hair loss with a lack of masculinity.

Is a Head of Hair a Sign of Virility?

Writing for Psychology Today, Dr. Joe Korte lamented the attacks he received online when posting on TikTok about myths regarding men’s sexuality. Specifically, people were attacking his weave. That led Dr. Korte to wonder what notions of masculinity are tied to hair.

“A healthy head of hair on men has long been seen as a signifier of virility, sexiness, and even confidence and leadership abilities. If you’re not considering Jeff Bezos (the wealthiest man in the world, they say), most CEOs have a full head of hair or at least appear to have one,” he wrote.

Korte eventually made a series of videos showing the process of donning his hair piece and continuing his educational content on male sexuality.

The reality is that excessive testosterone plays a role in the onset of male pattern baldness, though it is also flawed to say that bald men are necessarily more virile than men with a full head of hair.

Like everything in life, it is complicated.
