When going into any sort of conflict it is good to know the terrain it will be fought upon. In the case of hair loss and hair shedding… that battleground is the scalp. Other than the fact that it is on top of your head, most people do not have much more information at their fingertips.

What Part of the Head Is the Scalp?

The scalp consists of the layers of skin and underlying tissue that cover the part of the skull known as the cranial vault. The cranial vault is the part of the skull that encloses and protects the brain.

How Do I Know My Scalp Type?

There are three major scalp types: Dry, Oily, and Balanced.

When trying to determine which type your hair falls into, the first indicator to look for is how often you need to wash it. The more “Oily” your hair is, the more frequent washing will be needed to keep it from taking on a greasy appearance.

In general, oily hair types will need to wash every day or two. Balanced (or normal) hair types will need to wash roughly every three days. If you only need to wash once a week, that is an indicator that you have a dry scalp.

Why Is My Scalp Oily But My Hair Dry?

Dry hair and an oily scalp are a combination that most find to be puzzling. It all comes down to the production of sebum. Sebum is the oil your scalp produces in order to create a protective barrier against water evaporation.

When your scalp produces too much sebum, it will make your scalp and the roots of your hair greasy and oily. Since the ends of the hair strands stay dry, they can suffer damage – such as split ends – from the lack of moisture.

How Can You Tell If Your Hair Is Growing?

Since hair growth is the goal, it pays to know what to look for. There are a number of signs to keep your eyes open for.

  • Examine your scalp for small dark spots on your scalp indicating the growth of new hair root developing in the follicle.
  • Look for hairs of a different color. New growth should be visibly different in shade from the older, existing hairs.
  • Short hair strands appearing in areas that have exhibited hair loss or hair thinning previously.
  • Fine flyaway hairs that protrude from your scalp. If you seem to have a halo when you look in the mirror look closer and see if this is why.
