Hair restoration is an increasingly common procedure, but the process is still surrounded by quite a few misconceptions. Most of these stem from outdated information about who can have a hair transplant, the experience of having a procedure, and what the final results will look like.
Some of the biggest hair restoration myths are:
- Hair Transplants Look Fake:
The biggest myth about hair transplants is that they look “fake.” While this may have been true in the past due to patchy hair plugs and conspicuous scarring, today’s transplants are natural-looking. Even your hair stylist or barber may not be able to detect evidence of the procedure.
Contemporary transplants typically involve tiny groups of follicles or individual follicles. These are moved with the utmost precision from a donor area to recipient location, sometimes using robotic technology and AI assistance. This allows your surgeon to create a seamlessly blended hairline with no visible scarring. - Results Are Temporary:
There is a common belief that hair restoration is temporary and that transplants can fall out. It is true that many hair transplant clients will experience “shock” shedding in the weeks after a procedure, but this hair will regrow within several months and will be permanent.
- Only Men Can Have Hair Transplants:
The vast majority of hair restoration procedures are performed on men but anyone – regardless of gender – may benefit from transplantation. Women with conditions like traction alopecia, alopecia areata, scalp burns, or plastic surgery incisions may benefit from hair replacement. Even women whose hairline has been impacted by female pattern baldness may benefit from transplantation. Non-binary and trans individuals may undergo transplantation to create a hairline that aligns with their identity.
- Hair Transplants Are Painful:
Today’s hair transplants are significantly more comfortable and less invasive than they were in the past. The procedure – performed under a local anesthetic – is pain-free. Some clients may experience post-surgical discomfort such as itching, tightness, or tenderness, but this is easily managed with a brief course of medication.
- Older Patients Can’t Have Transplants:
If there is adequate donor hair and you have no health issues that preclude undergoing a procedure, there is no upper age limit for a hair transplant. Hair transplants do not require general anesthesia and pose little-to-no risk for those in good health. Any potential client who has a medical condition or chronic illness should consult their physician to determine if they are a candidate for a hair restoration procedure, regardless of age.
- You Can’t Wash Your Hair:
Another persistent misunderstanding is that you cannot wash and style transplanted hair. While you will be asked to refrain from hair washing for a few days after your procedure, you can then resume washing your hair. When you are fully healed, you can style your hair as desired. We suggest minimizing the use of harsh shampoos, chemical processes, and tightly pulled hairstyles… but that is good advice for anyone, not just those with transplanted hair.
- Transplants Are Expensive:
Hair restoration procedures are an investment in your confidence and well-being. They are available at a wide range of price points, depending on your finances and desired outcome. We will take the time to discuss your options and help you create a plan that works with your goals and budget.
