Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormonal byproduct of testosterone formed when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase acts upon testosterone. What Does DHT Do to Your Hair?
DHT has been found to be responsible for hair loss in both people assigned male at birth and those assigned female at birth. It is generally considered to be the most significant underlying factor behind male pattern hair loss. DHT levels vary with age, usually skewing highest during fetal development (when the genitals are being formed) and during puberty.
What Happens If DHT Is Too High?
In men, the most common symptom of high DHT is androgenic alopecia – more commonly known as “male pattern baldness.” It is also associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
DHT overproduction in women is frequently found to be the result of excess testosterone production and is often linked with androgenic alopecia (female pattern baldness).
